Worldwide diabetes is the most common endocrine disorder described as high blood sugar level disease, it is also known as diabetes mellitus.

Type of diabetes

There are two major types of diabetes type 1 and type 2. The most common is type 1. There is another type of diabetes called Gestational Diabetes it resembles type 2 diabetes in several respects. It occurs in about 2–10% of woman during pregnancies and may improve or disappear after delivery.

Causes of diabetes

Diabetes may occur either due to the pancreas not producing enough of the hormone insulin, or the body cells developing unresponsiveness effects to insulin’s.

Signs and symptoms

The common symptoms of diabetes, include increase of thirst, frequent urination, extreme hunger, and sudden weight loss. There are several other non-specific signs and symptoms including tiredness, blurred vision, sweet smelling urine/semen and genital itchiness. Gestational diabetes symptoms involved in combination of relatively inadequate insulin secretion and its responsiveness.

Common Treatment

The most common treatment for type 1 is insulin replacement therapy called external insulin injections. While to manage type 2, anti-diabetic medications such as metformin and semaglutide and lifestyle modifications can be beneficial.

Risk of type 2 diabetes

  1. Overweight or obesity
  2. Family history of type 2 diabetes
  3. High blood pressure
  4. Gestational diabetes during pregnancy
  5. Unhealthy diet

Ayurvedic treatment for Diabetes

Herbal Remedies:

  1. Gymnema Sylvestre or Gurmar: This Ayurvedic herb is known to reduce sugar cravings and improve insulin sensitivity.
  2. Fenugreek or Methi: High in fiber and can help regulate blood sugar levels.
  3. Bitter Gourd or Karela: It contains compounds that may help lower blood sugar levels.
  4. Turmeric or Haldi: Possesses anti-inflammatory properties which helps improve insulin sensitivity.
  5. Cinnamon or Daal-chini: Helps lower blood sugar level and improve insulin sensitivity.

Panchakarma Therapies:

Special procedures in Panchakarma (five detoxification procedures practice in Ayurveda) like Virechana (therapeutic purgation) and Vamana (therapeutic emesis) is recommended under the guidance of an experienced Ayurvedic practitioner this is to help restore metabolic balance in diabetes patience. Yoga therapy is also useful as it’s another part of the Panchakarma treatment system.

Lifestyle Modifications:

  1. Exercise: Regular Physical activity is crucial for improving insulin sensitivity and managing blood sugar levels. At least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise daily.
  2. Stress Management: Stress or Anxiety can raise blood sugar levels. Everyday practice stress-reducing techniques such as yoga, meditation, and deep breathing exercises. 
  3. Adequate Sleep: without break ensure 7-8 hours of quality sleep each night.   

Dietary Guidelines:

  1. Limit refined carbohydrates: Reduce intake of sugar, white bread, white rice, and processed foods.
  2. Increase fiber intake: Include plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains in your daily diet.  
  3. Incorporate bitter tastes fruits and vegetables: Found in foods like bitter gourd, drumstick, and leafy greens, helps to regulate blood sugar.  
  4. Avoid excessive intake of sweet, sour, and salty foods.
